Restoring Trust: Global action for transparency at the 14th IACC

As we draw to the close of day one, this November 10 in Bangkok at the 14th International Anti Corrption Conference under the theme; Restoring trust: Global Action for Transparency, we are asking ourselves as representatives of young people of the World at this Conference through the GYAC-Network:

Is it possible to restore trust in people amidst grave and damaging corrupt actions we see in our societies which continue to ensure that the poor grow poorer and the rich - richer?

Do you beleive that it is possible?
What strategies can we use to achieve this?

Sanya, there is a possibility.

For a start, our heads of states should be commiteed in this by taking to court all those who have messed up with public affairs whether leaders or normol citizens. Here I rember the Late Lev Mwanawasa, the former president of Zambia and Bingu wa Mutharika, the president of Malawi who without mercy took their predissessors in to court, i.e Fredrich Chiluba and Bakil Muluz respectively and their subordinate trusted them and to some extent discpline in public ofices was restored.

This needs passion and determination for sure.
I may sound very rude but this is how it should be. In Tanzania, this was done last year whereby several ministers are now attending the court and some other fellows have been prisoned though there are some entertainments with these cases
Hi Deogratias,

Many thanks for your input. We will keep collecting inputs and we invite other colleagues to feed in. At the 14th IACC the GYAC-N representatives need to make a strong impact. We acheived this today when the youth voice was heard in a powerful question to the Thai Prime Minister on youth participation and a resolve echoed at the end of the first plenary with TI putting youth on their next strategic plan adopted at the last GM a day before the start of the 14th IACC.

Let us keep talking because restoring trust is about us...If trust is not restored now, when we become Presidents and leaders of our nations tomorrow, people will not follow us because trust is not there...

I completely believe it is very much possible to restore trust in people and it begins with every individual and particularly the youths. It requires changing our orientation and be willing to participate. If we think some of our leaders in our countries have failed, folding our hands to watch them in dis-trust is not the solution rather, we need to believe in ourselves first and join force to make things right. It all begins from me and you.
Babafemi,

I agree with you that restoring trust is possible. I also very much agree that it starts with you and I. At this 14th IACC we have observed that the fight against corruption is seem not to be an affair for young people besides them being aware of the fact that corruption is happening and I totally disagree with such thought. If any global action needs to be effective in enforcing accountability and transparency in the management of our countries, peoples and resources and the fight against corruption, there is great need for young people to be included in the broad pictures that shows corruption as an evil that needs to be combatted.
