The Global Youth Anti-corruption Network (GYAC-Liberia) the only Liberian Youth Anti-Corruption Institution that creates a platform for youth involvement and consolidate the efforts of anti-corruption institutions and other campaign activists, including the media, musicians, etc in the fight against corruption for greater transparency and accountability will join the world over to observe the International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9, 2011.
The Day is celebrated annually to raise public awareness of corruption and ways to fight it. International Anti-Corruption Day is a time for political leaders, governments, legal bodies and lobby groups to work together against corruption work by promoting the day and the issues that surround this event.
GYAC-Liberia has observed with great dismay that, corruption undermines democracy, creates unstable governments, and sets countries back economically. It comes in various forms such as bribery, law-breaking without dealing with the consequences in a fair manner, unfairly amending election processes and results, and covering mistakes or silencing those who expose corruption in hope that justice would be served.
GYAC-Liberia also observe that corruption is an issue that affects all countries around the world including Liberia; that can be refer to the destruction of one’s honesty or loyalty through undermining moral integrity or acting in a way that shows a lack of integrity or honesty and those who use a position of power or trust for dishonest gain.
Therefore, GYAC-Liberia use this medium to call on the Government of Liberia to support all efforts of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission in the fight against corruption related activities such as bribery, Nepotism and inducement. As we observe this day GYAC-Liberia also want to call on Law Enforcement Agencies to effectively prosecute who be corrupt individuals in the public and private sectors. This action will serve as deterrent to others and will also help enforce the Whistle blower Law of Liberia. Finally, we want to call all Civil Society Actors to continue the fight in advocating constructively to make Liberia a corrupt free society.
