The European Commission will propose a set of measure to address more vigorously the serious harms generated by corruption at economic, social and political level.
The proposals will include:
A Communication on fighting corruption in the EU;
A Commission Decision establishing an EU anti-corruption reporting mechanism;
A report on the implementation of Council Framework Decision 2003/568/JHA on combating corruption in the private sector; and
A report on the modalities of EU participation in the Council of Europe Group of States against Corruption (GRECO)
The background:
The set of measures that will be adopted are part of a wider agenda to protect Europe's economy, as identified in the EU Internal Security Strategy in Action presented by the Commission in November 2010 (IP/10/1535).
In autumn 2011, the Commission will also propose a revised EU legal framework on confiscation and asset recovery.
The event:
Commissioner Cecilia Malmström will hold a press conference at 12:30 on 6 June 2011 (time to be confirmed).
IP and MEMO will be available on the day.
