The European Commission will propose a set of measure to address more vigorously the serious harms generated by corruption at economic, social and political level.

The proposals will include:

  • A Communication on fighting corruption in the EU;

  • A Commission Decision establishing an EU anti-corruption reporting mechanism;

  • A report on the implementation of Council Framework Decision 2003/568/JHA on combating corruption in the private sector; and

  • A report on the modalities of EU participation in the Council of Europe Group of States against Corruption (GRECO)

The background:

The set of measures that will be adopted are part of a wider agenda to protect Europe's economy, as identified in the EU Internal Security Strategy in Action presented by the Commission in November 2010 (IP/10/1535).

In autumn 2011, the Commission will also propose a revised EU legal framework on confiscation and asset recovery.

The event:

Commissioner Cecilia Malmström will hold a press conference at 12:30 on 6 June 2011 (time to be confirmed).

IP and MEMO will be available on the day.
