With unfathomable potentials to leapfrog from the development divide, African Nations still berth in the relegation waters of under-development for poor Leadership and instability of government. It is important for the continent to work towards sustaining democracy in the region as this will go along way to expand the opportunities of the region to join the rest of developed continents of the world.
South Africa, Ghana and now Nigeria have made bold statement in sustaining democracy for more than decades in the recent time. This is a good way to start, but then, much still need to be done in the area of legislation as this will help create a kind of water-tight security for the fledging democracy. For instance, in Nigeria at the moment, the issue of immunity clause need to be removed from the constitution so that a serving officer who contravens the law can easily be call to order using the instrumentality of the Federal constitution. Democracy thrives in the axle of Rule of Law and not in the other way round.
Much still need to be done in the educating the masses about the tenent and dividents of democraccy. i strongly believe this can be done and should be done without relenting effort. This way we can sustain peace in the region.
